Little Everglades Cross

Yesterday was a huge day for tall guys in the world of cyclocross. Porkchop wins nationals and Big Twig Hank, gets a victory in FL. Now I'm not saying that one race is better or more deserving of praise than the other, but let's just say, some of the same things occurred in both races. I'm kidding of course.

Seriously though, congrats to former Floridian, Ryan Trebon for taking nationals for the second time. And also, to all the Floridacross guys who took the crusade to KC and represented well.

Here's what you missed back on the home front;
The folks at the Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City put together a wonderful day of racing and entertainment. The course was very fast and very open. It was mostly on some sandy dirt roads, a few light gravel sections, some good grass, and a nice paved uphill section. The most challenging section was an uphill grass climb that immediately turned down into a tough off camber turn. I won the men's A race after getting a gap on the double barrier section on the first lap. I really didn't mean to get away there but figured if I could get some separation, then I would be able to rest and see if anyone had the legs to come up and challenge me.
The battle for 2nd through 5th was very animated with riders getting gaps and being pulled back continuously. Eventually on the last 2 laps, a separation was made and no major sprints were had.
The course was much fun and the people supporting it were fantastic! Thank you to all who came out and let's all make sure that this venue continues and grows.

Hank's OVCX Journal

While y'all are having a wonderful training day down in sunny FL, I'll be cold and wet and pinning it (hopefully) in Louisville, KY. The forecast says rain, and you know the rest. I raced well at Champions Park when I was there for the USGP back in October, so hopefully I can have a good race tomorrow. The course should be different, but the terrain will be similar; except for the muck! At least I hope!

It might work out that I can get down there to Dade City on the 14th. If so, I'll be bringing the heat, or lack there of. I'll post my result tomorrow after the race. Send your good vibes my way, I'm gonna need em'.

Florida Cyclocross '08 Race #1 &2

The Tallahassee races were this past weekend and our roving reporter, who is the news, was there to capture it. Here's the link to Adam's bike blog
There's some photos to show how the course was laid out.

The New York Times' obligatory annual cyclocross story

Every year, in that dark news chasm that exists between Election Day and Christmas, it seems the Times rediscovers cyclocross. Seems this year is no different.

Hank's OVCX Journal

This weekend I went with my trusted driver/ mechanic/ frame builder/ blogger KT, to the OVCX race in Dayton ,OH. It sucked! Or at least the race did. KT just received his super miniature tiny MSI notebook, on which he downloaded a bunch of cross videos from Nathan Spear

So even though I finished 15th, I felt like a winner thanks to some exciting GVA Trofee and World cup races. Oh yeah, now I need a euro mullet like Niels Albert.

They're promising two courses for the two separate races and a Saturday night party. The course should be brutal. After all, Tally ain't flat!

Stay tuned for more!

PSA: Wear Gloves!

Looking cool is over-rated. I usually don't wear gloves when the
weather is warm, but alas, that we never- ever be the case again.
These mangled hands took me to a 3rd place finish on Saturday at Uncle
Steve's
and an 8th place finish on Sunday at the Gun Club. If only I'd
been able to grab the bars. Who knew?

Waffles and 'cross! Yum!

I've received word from Dade City race promoter Dan Millstead that The Belgian Pearl should be on hand with their authentic Belgian-style waffles. The one above is what I sampled at the Bicycle Bash and all I can say is "Wow!" You guys are really going to love these.

Dan says the course looks great and will even roll through one of the barns on the ranch!

More USGP Louisville photos

Packet pickup was at Louisville Slugger Field. Hanky likes baseball!
The KT Prototype team car loaded up for two riders. Contents included 4 bikes on the roof; plus 10 wheels inside, 2 trainers, 3 helmets, 1 pit kit, 1 pump, 3 pairs of shoes, clothing for any possible wedder and a partridge in a pear tree.
this is an horrible photo of Florida Rider Kristen Bowers from Team Atomic. She made us proud fighting hard in the Elite Women's race.

Thank for driving KT.

Questions about standings

I noted a few issues with the standings as I was getting them ready for publishing. I noticed the Mens A race was off in the results for the final race. I believe Dan finished second. Hank Campbell was also listed twice, so I combined his totals and it moved him to 3rd.

Please take a look at note any other things that look out of whack. Thanks.

Final standings are in!!

Timing chips: your thoughts?

I got an email last night from a concerned racer who disagreed with the notion that the timing chips were the best method of scoring at the races. He was concerned with the fact that, if attached to the bike, a bike swap would eliminate you from the scoring.

I, in fact, had to make a bike swap at the state championship race and didn't for one instant think about my chip. Thankfully I had taken to tucking it in the leg of my shorts, mostly so I wouldn't forget it and take it home by accident. I know other racers who had attached them to their helmets or dropped them in a jersey pocket were not scored correctly because they were too high off the ground. Many found that attaching them to a shoe gave the best results.

While the data is very accurate when done correctly, it should not be considered infallible. A hand count of racers' laps should always accompany the timing system. I haven't heard of any major issues this season, but with the sport growing quickly, the number of participants is only going to grow.

What are your thoughts on the timing chips?

Dynamic results from Largo 'Cross 1 available

Florida Cycling has the detailed results from the first Largo race online. The AMB chip system has been great, giving us tons of data and accurate scoring. I hope we can expand its use next season. When the results of the state championships are available, you know where I'll post 'em.

Livin' the dream in Belgium

Brandon Dwight of VeloNews and his buddy Greg Keller have been living the dream this winter. They packed up and headed across the pond to Belgium to race in Master's World Championships. Sounds like they had an awesome time and had some successful racing too! Check it out at Mud and Cowbells.

Send us your bike porn!

[via Flickr]

Nothin' keeps the 'cross love burning deep inside us during the off season like gawking at sexy cyclocross steeds online. Dugast tubulars. Gutted SRAM levers. Deep section carbon wheels. You know, the good stuff.

I know many of you have cool, unusual, special, lightweight or one-off bikes you've been pimping at the races this year. Or maybe your buddy has one you've been drooling over. Either way, email some pics and specs and we'll show it off for everyone to see.

Let's talk Largo

I know most of you haven't even recovered from the wide-open Sarasota race yet but it's time to look ahead to the final course on the 07-08 calendar: Largo. The new course layout should level the playing field between the local racers and out-of-towners.

The course IS AT A NEW LOCATION this year. If you need the 411, you know where to find it. Or, download the race flyer [.pdf].

But this is the good stuff: Check out the beeeeee-utiful course map online here. This course has got it all. Long straights. Twisty wooded sections. Steep hills. Off-camber madness. I can't wait!

Rumor is a certain local cyclocross fanatic will be back in town to show us what he's learned in North Carolina.....

Stay tuned for more.
